Enerven has been appointed to design and construct two new 132kV switchbays, along with approximately 900m of 132kV underground cable and fibre, connecting the existing Transgrid 132kV Tomago Substation to the AGL Tomago BESS substation, facilitating the reliable transmission of electricity. This project will support grid connectivity and the integration of battery energy storage, which is playing an increasingly important role in system stability and balancing supply and demand.
The customer
Transgrid operates and manages the high-voltage electricity transmission network across New South Wales and the ACT, connecting generators, distributors and major end users. Its network forms the backbone of the National Electricity Market, enabling energy trading between Australia’s three largest east coast states and supporting a competitive wholesale electricity market. Enerven is proud to support Transgrid’s role in delivering critical infrastructure that helps maintain a safe, reliable and increasingly sustainable energy system.
The Tomago BESS connection project is significant because it supports Transgrid’s role in enabling the efficient connection of renewable energy and storage projects to the transmission network, while maintaining a safe, stable and reliable grid for all stakeholders. It also strengthens the network infrastructure needed to connect the AGL Tomago BESS to the existing Tomago Substation, helping Transgrid deliver on its commitment to support customers through timely and effective connection outcomes.
"We are pleased to have the support of Enerven to help us deliver the complex, high-voltage infrastructure so critical to the transition to renewable energy. We share a focus on delivering world-class infrastructure safely and efficiently for the benefit of all Australians."
Transgrid
The opportunity
The project aims to establish a reliable and efficient connection between the existing Transgrid Tomago Substation and the AGL Tomago BESS, strengthening grid connectivity and supporting the integration of battery energy storage into the transmission network. In doing so, the project helps facilitate the reliable transmission of electricity and supports the broader transition to a more flexible and sustainable energy system.
Enerven brings a strong combination of electrical infrastructure design and construct capability to the project, with the ability to plan, design, engineer, manage, construct and deliver complex energy infrastructure works as a single delivery partner. Our experience across renewable energy, utility infrastructure, substations, high-voltage and secondary systems positions us well to deliver the specialised works required for this connection.
Our delivery helps enable this connection. The new 132kV switchbays will provide the critical interface into the existing transmission network, while the 132kV underground feeders will enable the transfer of power and communications between the Tomago Substation and the BESS substation. Together, these components create the physical and operational link required for the battery system to connect safely, reliably and in line with network requirements. Enerven’s role is, therefore, to deliver the infrastructure that underpins the connection outcome and supports Transgrid and AGL in bringing this important energy project into service.
The solution
- Design and construction of two new 132kV Switchbays at Tomago 132kV Substation including all associated secondary upgrades.
- Design and Construction of two new 132kV underground cable and two new fibre connections between the existing Tomago substation and the AGL substation.
- Coordination of local procurement and workforce, supporting regional economic growth and sustainability goals.
- Collaboration with Tomago BESS Stakeholders, to deliver a state-of-the-art energy storage solution connection.
