The customer

EnergyAustralia is a major national energy retailer and generator, supplying electricity and gas to around 1.6 million customers across Eastern and Southern Australia, whilst employing approximately 2,300 people. As part of its vision for a more sustainable energy future, EnergyAustralia is building critical infrastructure to enhance grid stability and support South Australia’s leadership in clean energy.

The opportunity

The Hallett BESS is supporting Energy Australia’s strategy for more sustainable energy future. Co-located with the existing Hallett gas-fired power station, the Hallett BESS is a strategically important asset for EnergyAustralia, supporting its transition from traditional thermal generation to a more flexible, low‑carbon energy portfolio. The 50 MW / 245 MWh grid‑scale battery provides up to five hours of dispatchable energy storage, enabling EnergyAustralia to shift energy to periods of peak demand and rapidly respond to system events.

The project leverages established transmission and grid infrastructure to minimise environmental impact, reduce new network investment, and accelerate delivery. Once operational, the battery will provide frequency control, grid‑forming services, and energy arbitrage, strengthening system reliability and resilience within the National Electricity Market (NEM) while supporting the ongoing integration of renewable energy.

The solution

Enerven is responsible for delivering the civil, electrical and construction works required to bring the project from design into full operation.

This includes:

• Civil works and site preparation, foundations and construction platforms
• Electrical infrastructure, including cabling, earthing, auxiliary systems and balance‑of‑plant
• Connection works integrating the battery with existing transmission and substation infrastructure
• Coordination with live operations at the Hallett Power Station to ensure safety and system integrity

Key specifications delivered by Enerven:

• Design and construction of a 500 MW, two-hour duration BESS
• Construction of critical high-voltage infrastructure, including substations, transmission lines, and switchyard extensions
• Coordination of local procurement and workforce, supporting regional economic growth and sustainability goals
• Collaboration with Fluence, the EPC contractor, to deliver a state-of-the-art energy storage solution.

By delivering these components, Enerven enables the battery to connect, operate and provide its full range of grid services. The integration of Enerven’s construction scope with NHOA Energy’s battery and control systems ensures the Hallett BESS functions as a fully dispatchable, grid‑forming asset, capable of supporting South Australia’s power system under both normal and contingency conditions.
