Enerven was the delivery partner for Wärtsilä Energy's 250MW Torrens Island grid-scale battery project for AGL Australia.

The customer

AGL operates Australia’s largest private electricity generation portfolio within the National Electricity Market, comprising coal and gas-fired generation, renewable energy sources such as wind, hydro and solar, batteries and other firming technology, and gas production and storage assets.

Wärtsilä Energy is a global leader in innovative technologies and lifecycle solutions for the marine and energy markets and developed the battery technology for this project.

The opportunity

Enerven was the delivery partner for Wärtsilä Energy’s 250MW Torrens Island grid-scale battery project for AGL Australia. The grid-scale battery will support South Australia’s energy transition, providing essential capacity when renewable generation is impacted and during periods of high demand. It is around the size of Adelaide Oval and will support the growth of intermittent renewable energy in South Australia and is the first to begin construction within AGL’s planned 850MW national battery roll-out.

The solution

Key specifications:

  • approximately 27km of underground conduit for the 33kV high voltage, low voltage, and DC cabling associated with the battery plant has been installed
  • 109 Medium Voltage Power Stations (MVPS), 109 ACC/DCC battery control units, and 218 batteries installed
  • 750m of 275kV cable trench
  • A 275/33kV substation.
