As the Balance of Plant (BoP) contractor, Enerven proudly delivered the critical electrical works for the Bungama BESS. Located just out of Port Pirie, this innovative project will deliver 150MW/300MWh of energy storage capacity, enhancing grid stability and supporting the integration of renewable energy into South Australia’s power network.

The customer

Revera is a leading global power developer operating in the most attractive markets globally, delivering renewables, battery storage, green hydrogen and power-led AI data centres at scale.

The Bungama BESS Stage 1 is part of Revera’s multi-gigawatt portfolio of renewable energy projects in South Australia and represents another step forward in addressing the challenges of Australia’s energy transition.

"As Enerven expands its footprint in Australia’s growing energy storage market, we remain committed to providing solutions that enhance energy resilience and accelerate the path to a cleaner, more sustainable future."

The opportunity

A huge solar and battery project near the city of Port Pirie has been complete to help the state of South Australia reach its landmark target of 100 per cent “net” renewables by the end of 2027.

Stage 1 of the project, which comprised a 150 MW, 300 MWh battery, began construction in October 2024. Stage 2 delivered a further 100 MW, 200 MWh of battery and stage 3 a 280 MW solar farm.

Revera has contracted global technology group, Wärtsilä, to supply the BESS and provide a long-term service agreement. Enerven was contracted as the (BoP) contractor and maintenance provider. ElectraNet and Revera have executed a Transmission Connection Agreement to connect Bungama BESS to the National Energy Market (NEM) for ElectraNet to construct 275kV connection.

Stage one is now complete and includes the BESS system comprising 60 SMA MVPS, 240 Wärtsilä Quantum’s, a 275/33kV substation, 275kV Harmonic filter and shunt reactor.

The Bungama BESS facility is located on farmland adjacent to Locks Road, Bungama approximately 2.5 hours north of Adelaide, South Australia. The BESS and solar farm site are bound by Augusta Highway to the south and west and Gulf View Road to the north. The site transformed farmland and greenfield areas.

The new BESS substation (Bungama East) is connected via a 275kV cable to the Electranet’s Bungama substation situated west of the site at the intersection of Pirie Blocks Road and Warnertown Road, Bungama Substation.

The project provides critical energy storage capacity, improving grid reliability and supporting South Australia’s transition to a renewable energy future.

The solution
