Enerven has been appointed to connect two 120 MW BESS facilities, Summerfield BESS1 and BESS2 to ElectraNet’s network, including design, supply, and construction of a new greenfield 275kV Tepko substation adjacent to the established BESS facilities, augmentation of the Tungkillo substation, and adding 17km of new 275kV transmission line using the existing towers.

The customer

ElectraNet is South Australia’s leader in electricity transmission, operating over 5,600 circuit kilometres of transmission lines and more than 90 high-voltage substations across a vast area of over 200,000 square kilometres. This project facilitates the connection of new generation from the SE Renewable Energy Zone.

“This project reinforces Enerven’s commitment to delivering resilient grid infrastructure and connecting communities to cleaner, more reliable power.”

The opportunity

Located 17km southeast of the Tungkillo switchyard, the project scope includes:

  • Connection of Summerfield BESS1 and BESS2 to ElectraNet’s network
  • Design, supply and construction of a greenfield 275 kV Tepko substation for the connection of Summerfield BESS1 and BESS2
  • Augmentation works at Tungkillo substation, including the design and installation of a new feeder to connect Tepko
  • Installation of a new 17 km 275 kV transmission line using existing towers
  • Installation of civil, structural, primary, and secondary systems, transmission lines, and telecommunication infrastructure
  • Integration of ElectraNet supplied plant into Enerven’s delivery works.

The Summerfield BESS will supply energy to 70,000 homes daily, nearly 10% of the state’s households, through 222 battery containers spread over one hectare of land.

The solution

Enerven are delivering the design, procurement and construction of:

  • A new greenfield 275kV Tepko substation
  • Augmentation of the Tungkillo substation
  • Adding 17km of new 275kV transmission line using the existing towers.

A key feature of the project is the presence of cultural heritage, environmental, and UXO (unexploded ordnance) zones across the project area. Working closely with ElectraNet to develop innovative work methods such as utilising drone stringing has reduced the environmental footprint of this project as well as upholding cultural heritage requirements.

Enerven is utilising extensive experience and a deep understanding of the complexities of interfaces in this project to ensure optimal project delivery. There are critical and sensitive lines that form part of this project and ensuring little to no disruption to the interconnector line will be experienced.

Enerven’s experience in live line maintenance and alterations will be critical in delivering this project within deadlines.
