Enerven partnered with SA Water to deliver Solar PV and Energy Storage infrastructure as part of this program to enable SA Water to keep water service charges as low and stable as possible for their customers.

The customer

SA Water, owned by the people of South Australia, provides essential water services to over 1.8 million customers across the state. With a workforce of over 1,500 people, they ensure safe, clean drinking water and manage wastewater treatment to minimize environmental impact. SA Water oversees more than 27,000 km of water mains, working diligently to maintain high-quality water services throughout South Australia.

"SA Water’s Zero Cost Energy Future project is a groundbreaking initiative that combines renewable energy with innovative design to offset electricity consumption and achieve a sustainable, zero-net outcome."

The opportunity

Stage 1: Enerven delivered the first phase of the project, installing ground-mount solar systems across three key metropolitan sites:

  • Hope Valley Water Treatment Plant (1.5 MW)
  • Glenelg Wastewater Treatment Plant (1.32 MW)
  • Christies Beach Wastewater Treatment Plant (1.32 MW)

This stage involved extensive civil works, including site leveling, trenching for high-voltage and AC cabling, and installing custom-built transformers and switchrooms to manage the solar array’s energy distribution.

Stage 2: Building on the success of Stage 1, Enerven was engaged to deliver the next phase of the program, which involves the design, procurement, construction, and commissioning of approximately 154 MW of roof and ground-mount solar panels and 34 MWh of energy storage. This phase spans 33 SA Water sites across metropolitan and regional South Australia and is expected to support over 250 local jobs.

The solution

The project involved extensive civil works to prepare the sites for the solar installations, including leveling, grading, and trenching for high-voltage and AC cabling to connect the solar arrays to the electricity network. Each site was equipped with a custom-built transformer and a purpose-designed switchroom, which managed energy distribution.

This stage of the project was both challenging and rewarding, requiring significant collaboration and teamwork from the Enerven team. Despite the tight deadlines, the team worked tirelessly to ensure successful delivery.
