Enerven strengthens leadership in energy storage with the Bungama BESS, marking its fifth BESS project under construction.
Located just outside of Port Pirie, South Australia, the Bungama BESS project reflects Enerven’s growing dominance in large-scale energy storage infrastructure, contributing to Australia’s energy transition.
Richard Amato, CEO of Enerven, emphasised the importance of this project
“Securing the BoP contract for Bungama is a major milestone and demonstrates the trust the market places in our expertise. South Australia is where it all began for Enerven, and this project is a tremendous opportunity to showcase our capabilities locally. With five battery projects now under construction across the country, we are establishing ourselves as a leader in Australia’s energy storage market.”
The Bungama BESS is part of Amp’s AUD $2 billion Renewable Energy Hub of South Australia, comprising a strategic portfolio of renewable generation and battery assets across three key sites.
Global technology group Wärtsilä will supply the BESS and provide a long-term service agreement for the project – making this the fourth project where Wärtsilä has partnered with Enerven.
“Our collaboration with Wärtsilä and Amp on the Bungama project highlights our ability to deliver world-class energy infrastructure,” Mr Amato added.
“We aren’t just participating in the energy transition—we’re leading it by providing reliable, innovative solutions that make a meaningful impact on the grid.”
Amp’s President of Australia, Daniel Kim, said “Across our multi-gigawatt portfolio in Australia, Bungama BESS stage 1 is the first of our energy storage projects to reach this important milestone. We are committed to supporting South Australia achieve its ambitious net 100 per cent renewable energy target by 2027.”
“We are also delighted to be partnering with Wärtsilä and Enerven on this critical project and value their local proven track record of delivering high-performance energy storage solutions and supporting customers throughout the delivery phase and into operations,” Mr Kim said.
Wärtsilä Energy’s Vice President of Energy Storage and Optimisation, Andrew Tang, said,
“We are proud to continue our ongoing collaboration with Enerven to deliver high-performing and quality BESS to support Australia’s renewable energy goals.”
This latest milestone builds on Enerven’s reputation for delivering complex energy infrastructure projects. As Enerven expands its footprint in Australia’s growing energy storage market, it remains committed to providing solutions that enhance energy resilience and accelerate the path to a cleaner, more sustainable future.
Commercial operations date for Bungama BESS stage 1 is targeted for the first quarter of 2026.
