Enerven is proud to celebrate the ground breaking of the second stage of Origin Energy’s (Origin) Eraring Battery Energy Storage System (BESS).

Once complete, the Eraring BESS will be one of the largest energy storage systems in Australia, with the combined capacity of both stages exceeding 2GWh.

Speaking at the ground-breaking ceremony, Enerven CEO Richard Amato said “It’s an honour to be here with the The Hon. Greg Piper, MP, and Origin CEO Frank Calabria to mark this important milestone. Being entrusted with the delivery of both stages of the Eraring BESS reaffirms our commitment to Australia’s energy transition.”

Enerven has been appointed to design and construct both stages of this nationally significant project in New South Wales. “This project showcases the best of what Enerven offers—innovative high-voltage infrastructure solutions designed to meet the evolving needs of the energy sector,” Mr Amato said.

“We are proud to be working with Origin to create a more stable and sustainable energy future.”

The second stage of the Eraring BESS will add a 240 MW/1030 MWh four-hour duration, grid-forming battery to complement the 460 MW/1073 MWh two-hour battery already under construction in stage one.

Construction on stage two will commence in early 2025, with completion expected by the first quarter of 2027. The combined system will strengthen the reliability of the electricity grid, providing greater flexibility to manage fluctuations in renewable energy supply.

“With the Eraring BESS, Origin is investing in future-proof energy solutions, and we are proud to partner with them on this ambitious project,” Amato concluded. “This battery will enable the grid to support more renewable energy, helping Australia on its journey to a cleaner, more resilient energy future.”
